When Being a Quitter is a Good Thing

While I'm away on my month-long adventure I have some friends here to help me share their experiences with adventure. Today Natalia from Achieve the Impossible is talking about how she found a sense of adventure in choosing to make a hard decision but one that was best for her and her life.

870ac1a4a472b14e135d167fa895853d

Last year, out of the blue, I was offered a volunteer leadership opportunity with a coaching organization. Based on my conversations, the role seemed like a great fit and it sounded like an amazing adventure.

I was given a few days to think it over; but the way I saw it, it was a done deal. I was so excited to be a part of a dynamic professional community and create great work together. What’s not to love?

Six months into the job, I was spending about 40 hours a week struggling to stay atop of my volunteer duties, often neglecting my business, personal relationships and other important commitments. Hard work never bothered me; however, in this case, as much as I tried, I couldn’t make it work. Turns out, this tribe wasn’t my tribe and the work, well, it didn’t light my heart on fire.

What I thought was going to be an exciting adventure in reality felt like torture.

But what could I do?

I made a commitment and it was my responsibility to keep my end of the bargain. I couldn’t just walk away, after all, people were counting on me.

Many of you, I’m sure, have been in a similar predicament. It’s tough to navigate but not impossible to handle. This is what you do:

Be honest with yourself

This is hard but the truth will set you free.

At first, I was afraid to the truth about I was really feeling and refused to listen to all the different ways my body was telling me to stop. Denial takes a lot of physical energy and emotional space. I felt tired and couldn’t find the motivation to do anything at all. Once I found the courage to be honest with myself, I felt free and energetic. I finally had the emotional bandwidth to consider my options and next steps. Oh relief!

Resistance Vs. It’s not working out

This is the type of thing I asked myself in the first few months. Is it resistance? Or is it just not working out?

Sometimes it takes to know for sure. We need to give it a solid try and I think there’s nothing wrong with that. But, some people don’t like licorice, they don’t need to try anymore – they just don’t like the taste. While many people before me loved doing this work, it wasn’t quiet the right fit for me.

With anything life, we have to know where the line is between resistance and something not being a good match. Do you really want to do it? Or is it something you’re doing because you think you have to?

What are saying Yes to?

Integrity is important to me and I loathe breaking promises. So much that I’ve been known to keep my promises regardless of how I felt about them. My word was a rock and so was I.

A wise woman once told me that by saying YES to things I don’t want to do, I was saying NO to things that energized and filled me up. Keeping a promise for the sake of keeping a promise is not being in integrity, it’s self-torture.

Yes, keeping your word is an honorable thing to do and people will always appreciate this about you. But what are you giving up as a result? What are you saying NO to by continuing to say YES to things that no longer serve you?

You’re allowed to change your mind

You can commit to something and then change your mind. It doesn’t make you a flake. It means that situation has changed and what once seemed like a great idea doesn’t fit anymore.

You know as well as I do that it’s nearly impossible for us to fully show up and do our best work when your heart is not in it. I thought I was doing this coaching organization a favor by enduring when in reality they deserved someone who wanted to be there and could give them their 100 per cent.

Ask yourself why it is that you do what you do, and whether you truly want to keep going. It’s worth noticing if you’re doing it because you think you have to, while ignoring something that you embrace enthusiastically and with your whole heart.

When I realized that I didn’t to force myself do the work that didn’t fill me up, I felt better. Sure, I may have disappointed others and some may think of me as a quitter. But I was quitting in favor of something that I wanted more: to work on projects that were closely aligned with my soul’s desires and surround myself with people who’s company I enjoyed.

Finding Adventure in the Everyday

adventure When you read this post I'll probably be flying somewhere over the Pacific ocean on my way to Hong Kong, India, Cambodia and Thailand. I love and live for adventure. It brings me great joy to pack a bag and just go, however, I've come to realize in the last few years that being adventurous doesn't necessarily mean you have to get on a plane and go somewhere.

You can find adventure in everything and everywhere

The last two months I've been struggling with what I so easily call 'the seasonal funk.' I've been really trying to dive in to what it is I'm actually feeling and  I've come to realize that I'm not really sad or feeling depressed so to speak, but rather I'm not truly living how I want to be living.

I'm lacking regular adventure.

In the past I have placed so much emphasis on adventure being this big, hugely wild experience (kind of like traveling all over the world) and but I can also get that sense of adventure in my own back yard. My soul craves regular adventure and trying new things but obviously I can't jump on a plane and cruse all over the world all the time (not yet anyway) so I really need to find ways to experience that adventurous feeling here, in Oregon as well.

Even though we are heading off to an epic adventure,  I still need to find adventure in the everyday to truly be happy and feel like myself.

So how can I/we do this?  It's actually quite easy.

comfort zone

I'm going to start living outside of my comfort zone where the real magic happens and I'm inviting YOU to join me!

I've lived in Oregon for almost three years and I still feel like a stranger in my own city. There are small towns and bigger cities to be explored as well as mountains to hike and ocean towns to be perused. I'm going to make it an adventure to go out and explore this beautiful place where I get to call home.

I'm also going to do the following:

- I'm going to put myself out there more. I mean, like hosting workshops and lectures and networking events where I have to talk in front of large amounts of people.(My secret dream but one of my biggest fears!)

- I'm going to experiment more in the kitchen and try to create more new recipes on my own instead of fearing I'll mess up

- I'm going to walk around the house in short shorts more often and feel confident and sexy in the body I have.

- I'm going to do more of what I really want to do instead of what I think I have to or should do.

What can YOU do to add more adventure into your life? It doesn't have to be a big, huge thing. It can be as simple as taking  a different route, one that you've never taken before.

While I'm away I am having some of my friends sharing posts with you with the theme of adventure and to show you other's experiences with finding adventure in almost anything you do.

I'm sure I will pop in to say hi while I'm away but part of this adventure is being very present in the moment and this trip with my husband.  I'm excited for this adventure.

But tell me in the comments what is one thing you are going to do to embrace a sense of adventure in your everyday life?

Comfortably Yum - A Giveaway

When my husband and I decided that we wanted to try out a vegan diet, we did so for a month and as it turns out, we loved how we felt both with what we were putting into our bodies and our impact on the environment as well as all the animals we'd be saving, that we never looked back.  I've had so much fun over the last two and a half years playing around with recipes and my excitement and love of cooking has grown exponentially. And then every now and then something comes along and solidifies how I feel even further.

One of the things I love doing is showing others that you don't have to have meat or dairy in your diet to have FANTASTIC meals. There are so many incredible recipes out there that even the more diehard carnivore will love.

I'm excited to share this new eCookbook, Comfortably Yum,  that my lovely and very talented friend, Allison from Allison's Gourmet has created. And guess what? She is giving away a copy to one of YOU!

ComfortablyYum

Allison is a trained vegan chef with over 20 years of plant-based cooking experience and this labor of love is her first eCookbook and I'm happy to share it with all of you.

I met Allison at IIN (Institute of Integrative Nutrition) and we instantly clicked. Actually, she sought me out because I was vegan and developed an instant friendship from there.

Comfortably Yum is a recipe book of ten of your old favorite comfort meals but made plant-based including, Mac and Cheese, Tuna Melt, Vegan Egg Salad and my personal favorite, the Salted Caramel Pudding Parfait (quite possibly one of the best desserts I've ever had!)

ComfortablyYumRecipes

I've had the pleasure of trying almost all of these recipes because I was a recipe tester for her and I will say, in my honest opinion, they are incredibly delicious, hearty and very satisfying.

So what do you have to do to enter? It's easy, just like me on Facebook and leave a comment here telling me which recipe you really want to try! The winner will be picked at random on February 18th.

This giveaway is open to all, 18 years or older and will be live from Monday, February 10th to Monday, February 17th, 11:59pm.

If you're as excited about this book as I am and you want your copy of Comfortably Yum right away, here's a code to get $5 off for this week only: SSA14. (If you win, Allison's will give you a refund.)

It is full of delectable whole, plant-based recipes that will leave your mouth watering and your body longing for more!

living-in-the-moment Tell me all about your mission?

To start with, thank you for asking! It’s a BIG question, and one I find myself contemplating almost daily.

If I can break it down in the most digestible of ways, I’d say this: My mission is to radiate a message that moves people to their core; that shakes them about; rocks them; and inspires them into action. I am incredibly passionate about illuminating hope in the hearts of those that enter my life.

That can unfold in any number of ways. Whether someone has been through my program (the Party Girls Guide to Peace), or they’ve read one of my books, watched one of my videos, coached with me or heard me speak at an event, in every one of these transactions of time and energy, my mission is to open up a new way of thinking.

I like to say that my original medicine is: fierce and curious vulnerability, as well as purposeful rebellion. I want to stretch people.

The name Such Different Skies is about just that. We’re all seeing the same sky. But, at the same time, we’re actually really not. Perception is like poetry to me: mysterious, and worth opening a discussion about.

What sparked your interest in coaching/mentoring?

It chose me to be honest!

I’ve always wanted to be useful to people, and after self-diagnosing myself with Scatterbrain Syndrome, became really quite frustrated with my inability to stick to a certain endeavour or career path. I’ve hairdressed, gone to uni, became a qualified personal trainer. I waitressed and bar tended for years. None of it stuck. It all kinda bored me.

Coaching fell in my lap after I continued to share my stories and insights on my blog. People were knocking on my inbox’s door, asking ever so politely for guidance and assistance on their path. Before I knew it, a business was born.

From there, I’ve not looked back. I’m still forever trying new things and course directing, but these days, it’s all aligned. It’s all pointing in the same direction. Where? Wouldn’t have a bloody clue - but it feels good. I feel useful, and fulfilled, and incredibly grateful.

What is your favorite thing about coaching?

Hands down: being stunned to the point of jaw dropping awe each time I hear one of my girls has quit her job / written her book / gotten the promotion / found the love of her life / launched her blog / sobered up / cultivated true peace in her normally chaotic life.

To think that I may play a role in facilitating the bravery that these women muster is beyond an honour. They inspire the pants off me.

Tell us a little bit more about your program, Party Girls Guide to Peace? Sounds amazing and I know it has helped so many!

It really is amazing. I’m so proud of the work that it’s done in the world. It’s a labour of love of mine – so much so that I’ve taken it off the shelves so I can create something that will help more women than ever before.

Basically my mission statement with the Party Girls Guide to Peace has been and will continue to be this: You are NOT your Party Girl identity. You are bigger, better, more beautiful, more radiant, more incredible, when you are just the way you are. Watch this space.

Finish these sentences:

I am happiest when…

I straighten my legs out into savasana.

That moment when my man smiles at me when I collect him from the airport every month.

I gift myself the mornings (a new habit of mine which is paying off big time). I’m laughing with my girls.

I come up for that big burst of fresh air after diving under my first wave of the day. I hang up from a call with my client, knowing she’s inspired and raring to go. Glen and I connect over one of his beautiful meals.

I am currently listening to…

A hell of a lot of Lorde. Her lyrics transcend what should be humanly possibly for any 16 year old to write.

And MJ. Pah-lenty of MJ.

My favorite place is…

Tara Burleigh If I’m not on some epic, life changing adventure, then I want to be here. At home. Burleigh Heads. I don’t know what it is about this place but it has certainly picked me to pieces and plugged me into the shoreline. I can actually feel my stomach cramp up when I drive away from the beach and towards the highway!

I feel more natural, more beautiful, more joyful, when I am here.

It makes my blood boil when…

People plagiarize the work of my friends.

I am most grateful… To be here. To get another crack at life each morning, and everything that comes with it: the man, the kindred spirits, the work, the adventure, the contemplations, the stillness. I am just so, so incredibly grateful to be alive.

Actually, last night, when I stepped out of the shower and reached for my towel, I said out loud : F*ck I love my life. That type of thing happens regularly.

I just want to add here how grateful I am for my man, Glen. He is my warmth.

What does self-care/love mean to you?

I truly believe that if we’re to adopt a self-care practice, then we must cultivate a foundation of self love first. Otherwise, we’re just wearing another pretend-mask. The ‘yogi.’ The ‘vegan.’ The ‘green juicer.’

When we radiate love for ourselves, we’ll naturally feel compelled to express that love in a physical way, and that’ll take a different shape for everyone. Meditation, gentleness, whole foods, exercise. There is no blueprint.

For me, it means gifting myself the mornings, and this means the absolute world to me. It has changed the way I approach my day, do business, and create. Both self love and self care are vital elements of my life, both of which are integrated into me and occur quite naturally.

I’m all about embracing who we are right now. What is your favorite thing about yourself, personality and appearance?

What a rad question!

Personality: I’m enthusiastic, unapologetically curious and silly.

Appearance: I like my shoulders and my upper back :)

In your own words, what is a Savoury Soul?

Hhhm. Savoury Soul sounds quite Earthy too me. Grounded. And when I think of ‘savoury’ and ‘earthy’ I think of my man’s Sweet Potato Gnocchi!

gnocchi 2 RECIPE

Ingredients

Sweet Potato - 1kg, whole

Whole Spelt Flour - 350 gm

Sage - ¼ cup, finely chopped

Rosemary - ¼ cup,finely chopped

Salt & Pepper

Peas - ½ cup, fresh if possible

Asparagus - 24 spears, cut on an angle

Broccolini - 20, florets trimmed off, stalks cut on an angle

Spring Onion - 8, cut on an angle

Brown Onion - 1, finely sliced

Confit Garlic - 12 cloves, chopped {Recipe is in upcoming eBook}

Sage - ¾ cup, whole leaves

Salt & Pepper

Coconut Oil

Method

Preheat your oven to 180c. Cut sweet potato in half lengthways and put it onto a baking tray cut side down. Cook this in the oven until a knife can easily be inserted right to the middle.

Remove the flesh from the skin. Puree the flesh in a food processor or using a fork.

Remove flesh to a bowl and add sage, rosemary and a generous amount of salt and pepper.

Add flour and mix by hand until well incorporated. (You may need gloves. The potato will be hot!)

To shape the gnocchi, you can either roll the dough with your hands on a floured bench then cut to desired length with a knife, OR put the gnocchi dough into a piping bag and squeeze it out through the largest nozzle you have, cutting them off at about 1.5cms length.

In a large pot of simmering salted water, cook gnocchi in small batches until they float. Once they are floating, spoon them into iced water to cool.

Once cooled, remove from the iced water and lay out on a tea towel. Allow to dry.

Once dry, lightly coat with olive oil.

{At this stage, you can either go ahead and cook the gnocchi, or store for a few days in the fridge} Preheat your oven to 180c.

Spread gnocchi evenly onto a baking tray and put them in the oven for 15 minutes, giving the tray a little shake 3-4 times.

After gnocchi has been in the oven for 5 minutes, in a large frypan over medium to high heat, cook onion and garlic in a little coconut oil until they start to brown.

Add sage leaves, asparagus and broccolini stems and continue to cook for 3 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Add peas, spring onion, broccolini florets and 2 tablespoons of confit garlic oil and cook for a further 1 minute.

Remove gnocchi from the oven and put into a large bowl with the ingredients from the frying pan.

Toss thoroughly, season and divide evenly among plates.

Are You Ready for Some Football? Vegan Style!

I'll be 100% honest with you. I'm really not the biggest sports fan. I always rather be out hiking someplace or doing something active instead but I grew up in a sports crazed home so there are things I do love about them even if I don't care to watch them myself. It reminds me of my childhood and my family and for that, I love it game days.  With the Superbowl coming up here in the US on Sunday I thought I would talk about the one area of sports I love and that is the camaraderie, the big gathering of friends and family watching my hometown team, the Seahawks play in the big game and of course, the food!

Okay, let's just skip to the food part because that's really what I want to talk about anyway!

Before I ate a plant-based diet I use to fear big social gatherings because I felt like I had no control around the food table. I would follow all the recommended tips to prevent overconsumption like eat before you go and drink lots of water but without fail, I would always leave having consumed WAY too much junk and then I'd spend the rest of the evening in a deep state of self-loathing.

However, when I decided to really clean up my diet and only eat high-quality, whole, plant-based foods everything changed. I no longer fear those big food spreads because I've committed to not eating those for my health and happiness and I always bring a few goodies that I can eat and share with my friends. And you know what? They are ALWAYS a huge hit!

One of my all-time favorites and one I will definitely be making this Sunday are these Buffalo Cauliflower Bites. This is a recipe I made on my other blog, Bullfrogs and Bulldogs and is a huge hit with my veggie and carnivore friends.

Buffalo-Cauliflower

One of my favorites growing up, and I can't believe I am going to admit this, was eating Velveeta Chili Cheese Dip that my mom always made. Those days are long gone but this version from Post Punk Kitchen of a Cashew Queso is one I have made several times and definitely a crowd pleaser!

I'm also always good for bringing a big bowl of guacamole with a side of rice crackers and veggies. I'll have to post my famous guac recipe here soon.

Some other great ideas are humus and veggies and you can always check out my Pinterest page for more plant-based superfood recipes that all will enjoy nibbling on!

I promise you, it's so much easier than you'd ever expect. Last weekend for my mom's surprise 60th birthday party I made a vegan spinach and artichoke dip and it was gone before you could say "plant-based foods are the bomb!" Did I mention I'm a total cheese ball?

Regardless of who you are rooting for this coming Sunday (go Hawks!) you don't have to miss out on your foodie favs! Be sure to follow my Pinterest page for more awesome ideas!
