A Savoury Soul: Tara Bliss // Such Different Skies

Hey Kids! So, I'm not exactly bringing the A Savoury Soul interview series back quite yet but this one is super special so I had to share with you ASAP. Have you heard of the lovely Tara Bliss from Such Different Skies? If not then you will thank me later. I started following Tara's blog about a year ago when I stumbled upon it, I think from Jess Ainscough's blog, The Wellness Warrior and I was hooked right away.

Tara has a raw authenticity about her that makes you feel like you are sitting right next to her. Through her writing and vlogs you are pulled into her spirited world and find yourself going back for more regularly.

I'm excited to share this interview with you because she is such a huge source of inspiration for me and I think she will be for you as well. Make sure you read the whole interview because Tara and her sweetie, Glen have just released their new eCookbook, Such Different Eats and she offers you all one of their amazing recipes below. It is full of delectable whole, plant-based recipes that will leave your mouth watering and your body longing for more!

living-in-the-moment Tell me all about your mission?

To start with, thank you for asking! It’s a BIG question, and one I find myself contemplating almost daily.

If I can break it down in the most digestible of ways, I’d say this: My mission is to radiate a message that moves people to their core; that shakes them about; rocks them; and inspires them into action. I am incredibly passionate about illuminating hope in the hearts of those that enter my life.

That can unfold in any number of ways. Whether someone has been through my program (the Party Girls Guide to Peace), or they’ve read one of my books, watched one of my videos, coached with me or heard me speak at an event, in every one of these transactions of time and energy, my mission is to open up a new way of thinking.

I like to say that my original medicine is: fierce and curious vulnerability, as well as purposeful rebellion. I want to stretch people.

The name Such Different Skies is about just that. We’re all seeing the same sky. But, at the same time, we’re actually really not. Perception is like poetry to me: mysterious, and worth opening a discussion about.

What sparked your interest in coaching/mentoring?

It chose me to be honest!

I’ve always wanted to be useful to people, and after self-diagnosing myself with Scatterbrain Syndrome, became really quite frustrated with my inability to stick to a certain endeavour or career path. I’ve hairdressed, gone to uni, became a qualified personal trainer. I waitressed and bar tended for years. None of it stuck. It all kinda bored me.

Coaching fell in my lap after I continued to share my stories and insights on my blog. People were knocking on my inbox’s door, asking ever so politely for guidance and assistance on their path. Before I knew it, a business was born.

From there, I’ve not looked back. I’m still forever trying new things and course directing, but these days, it’s all aligned. It’s all pointing in the same direction. Where? Wouldn’t have a bloody clue - but it feels good. I feel useful, and fulfilled, and incredibly grateful.

What is your favorite thing about coaching?

Hands down: being stunned to the point of jaw dropping awe each time I hear one of my girls has quit her job / written her book / gotten the promotion / found the love of her life / launched her blog / sobered up / cultivated true peace in her normally chaotic life.

To think that I may play a role in facilitating the bravery that these women muster is beyond an honour. They inspire the pants off me.

Tell us a little bit more about your program, Party Girls Guide to Peace? Sounds amazing and I know it has helped so many!

It really is amazing. I’m so proud of the work that it’s done in the world. It’s a labour of love of mine – so much so that I’ve taken it off the shelves so I can create something that will help more women than ever before.

Basically my mission statement with the Party Girls Guide to Peace has been and will continue to be this: You are NOT your Party Girl identity. You are bigger, better, more beautiful, more radiant, more incredible, when you are just the way you are. Watch this space.

Finish these sentences:

I am happiest when…

I straighten my legs out into savasana.

That moment when my man smiles at me when I collect him from the airport every month.

I gift myself the mornings (a new habit of mine which is paying off big time). I’m laughing with my girls.

I come up for that big burst of fresh air after diving under my first wave of the day. I hang up from a call with my client, knowing she’s inspired and raring to go. Glen and I connect over one of his beautiful meals.

I am currently listening to…

A hell of a lot of Lorde. Her lyrics transcend what should be humanly possibly for any 16 year old to write.

And MJ. Pah-lenty of MJ.

My favorite place is…

Tara Burleigh If I’m not on some epic, life changing adventure, then I want to be here. At home. Burleigh Heads. I don’t know what it is about this place but it has certainly picked me to pieces and plugged me into the shoreline. I can actually feel my stomach cramp up when I drive away from the beach and towards the highway!

I feel more natural, more beautiful, more joyful, when I am here.

It makes my blood boil when…

People plagiarize the work of my friends.

I am most grateful… To be here. To get another crack at life each morning, and everything that comes with it: the man, the kindred spirits, the work, the adventure, the contemplations, the stillness. I am just so, so incredibly grateful to be alive.

Actually, last night, when I stepped out of the shower and reached for my towel, I said out loud : F*ck I love my life. That type of thing happens regularly.

I just want to add here how grateful I am for my man, Glen. He is my warmth.

What does self-care/love mean to you?

I truly believe that if we’re to adopt a self-care practice, then we must cultivate a foundation of self love first. Otherwise, we’re just wearing another pretend-mask. The ‘yogi.’ The ‘vegan.’ The ‘green juicer.’

When we radiate love for ourselves, we’ll naturally feel compelled to express that love in a physical way, and that’ll take a different shape for everyone. Meditation, gentleness, whole foods, exercise. There is no blueprint.

For me, it means gifting myself the mornings, and this means the absolute world to me. It has changed the way I approach my day, do business, and create. Both self love and self care are vital elements of my life, both of which are integrated into me and occur quite naturally.

I’m all about embracing who we are right now. What is your favorite thing about yourself, personality and appearance?

What a rad question!

Personality: I’m enthusiastic, unapologetically curious and silly.

Appearance: I like my shoulders and my upper back :)

In your own words, what is a Savoury Soul?

Hhhm. Savoury Soul sounds quite Earthy too me. Grounded. And when I think of ‘savoury’ and ‘earthy’ I think of my man’s Sweet Potato Gnocchi!

gnocchi 2 RECIPE

Ingredients

Sweet Potato - 1kg, whole

Whole Spelt Flour - 350 gm

Sage - ¼ cup, finely chopped

Rosemary - ¼ cup,finely chopped

Salt & Pepper

Peas - ½ cup, fresh if possible

Asparagus - 24 spears, cut on an angle

Broccolini - 20, florets trimmed off, stalks cut on an angle

Spring Onion - 8, cut on an angle

Brown Onion - 1, finely sliced

Confit Garlic - 12 cloves, chopped {Recipe is in upcoming eBook}

Sage - ¾ cup, whole leaves

Salt & Pepper

Coconut Oil

Method

Preheat your oven to 180c. Cut sweet potato in half lengthways and put it onto a baking tray cut side down. Cook this in the oven until a knife can easily be inserted right to the middle.

Remove the flesh from the skin. Puree the flesh in a food processor or using a fork.

Remove flesh to a bowl and add sage, rosemary and a generous amount of salt and pepper.

Add flour and mix by hand until well incorporated. (You may need gloves. The potato will be hot!)

To shape the gnocchi, you can either roll the dough with your hands on a floured bench then cut to desired length with a knife, OR put the gnocchi dough into a piping bag and squeeze it out through the largest nozzle you have, cutting them off at about 1.5cms length.

In a large pot of simmering salted water, cook gnocchi in small batches until they float. Once they are floating, spoon them into iced water to cool.

Once cooled, remove from the iced water and lay out on a tea towel. Allow to dry.

Once dry, lightly coat with olive oil.

{At this stage, you can either go ahead and cook the gnocchi, or store for a few days in the fridge} Preheat your oven to 180c.

Spread gnocchi evenly onto a baking tray and put them in the oven for 15 minutes, giving the tray a little shake 3-4 times.

After gnocchi has been in the oven for 5 minutes, in a large frypan over medium to high heat, cook onion and garlic in a little coconut oil until they start to brown.

Add sage leaves, asparagus and broccolini stems and continue to cook for 3 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Add peas, spring onion, broccolini florets and 2 tablespoons of confit garlic oil and cook for a further 1 minute.

Remove gnocchi from the oven and put into a large bowl with the ingredients from the frying pan.

Toss thoroughly, season and divide evenly among plates.

A Savoury Soul: Whitney Scofield Mack // Macks Mo

macks mo I first met this weeks Savoury Soul, Whitney, when we briefly worked together at lululemon athletica in Seattle. Whitney is extremely sweet and a pillar in the community of health, wellness and fitness with her company, Mack's Mo that she and her husband started in 2012.

Macks Mo is a health community designed to give you the tools required to get the most out of life, offering both individual and group training and recently added, online nutritional coaching. Whitney is a fellow IINer (Institute of Integrative Nutrition) as well! We most definitely are creating a ripple affect!

You can tell that Whitney has one of the deepest passions when it comes to health, fitness and wellness and she is nothing short of motivating.

Without further ado...

Tell me all about your mission?

I believe in the power of momentum – that every little step and small decision along the way to improving your health adds up to lasting changes that stand the test of time. By using food and fitness as a foundation for establishing positive habits, clients build the momentum needed to wisely examine every action to streamline a path towards creating a life overflowing with happiness, passion and joy that’s lived to the “macks”.

What sparked your interest in living a healthy life?

Two things: cooking with my Mom and working at lululemon athletica and getting involved within the fitness community. Cooking with my mom inspired me to cook more at home, which ultimately developed my love for cooking at home with good food. I loved the energy of group fitness classes and the potential to share healthy habits within a tight-knit community, which ignited my desire to teach.

What do you find people are most confused about in regards to eating healthy?

Labels. Food marketing is super misleading and consumers trying to be make healthy food choices are often dooped by savvy labels and misinformation. Anything trying to sell itself as “healthy” should be left on the shelf – the ingredients in food speak for themselves; and you don’t see a “eat me, I’m healthy” sign in the produce section.

If you could cook for anyone who would it be and what would you cook?

That is a tough one. I guess I would love to cook for any client who thinks that they don’t have time to prepare quick, good-tasting, high-quality meals.

What are your top 3 favorite plant-based ingredients to use?

Coconut oil, hemp seeds and chia seeds. Coconut oil is a staple in my cooked foods and basically anything raw gets the latter two! 

Finish these sentences:

I am happiest when… I am connecting with friends or family, laughing and playing games!

I am currently listening to… because I am a group fitness instructor, my music is constantly changing – but in my car, “The Coats” Christmas CD’s (yes, I realize it’s not Thanksgiving yet but truthfully I started listening to them right after Halloween – what can I say?!).

My favorite place is… Montana or anywhere with my husband, Regan.

It makes my blood boil when… cars won’t let other cars merge during traffic. We all know what it’s like to be in the wrong lane or have to make some quick lane switches, so perhaps apply the Golden Rule when driving!

I am most grateful for… my husband. He balances me out in the best ways and keeps me grounded. I can get pretty wound up with all that’s on my plate and he reminds me to be present and enjoy every moment. And he makes every moment more fun, so it’s a win-win.

What does self-care/love mean to you?

Putting your own health and well-being above others; especially for those of us who are “givers” (myself included). Too often, since we enjoy serving others, we forget to take care of ourselves – which leads to burn-out and exhaustion! So, I try to do at least two things per day that increase my health and happiness – it could be taking the time to call a friend or taking a really long shower. For me, a lot of times it means slowing down and asking the question “what does my body need and does what I am doing serve my happiness?”

What is your favorite thing about yourself, personality and appearance?

Honestly? Ha ha – my butt!  It’s my favorite asset (pun intended) and gives me clout when speaking to clients about how importance of back body strength!

In your own words, what is a Savoury Soul?

A savoury soul for me would be liken to a bosom friend or kindred spirit. I see a savoury soul as “juicy” – full of life and exuding love to those around them.

She founded Macks Mo - a Seattle-based and online fitness + nutrition business with her husband in 2012, is a fitness presenter and lululemon ambassador. Her business helps active, professional women reduce weight and stress, while increasing energy, passion and joy through her group classes, coaching and nutrition programs. Her goal in her work is to redefine "health" and ignite a revolution that helps clients achieve balance and happiness through the perfect marriage of food + fitness, allowing them to get more out of their lives.

A Savoury Soul -- Holly Sugrue // Videos by Holly

holly2

Friends! I'm so excited about today's Savoury Soul for many reasons but my real excitement  stems from my new interest in being in front of the camera and producing video for you all and this gem is the soul to help you understand exactly how to do so and do so well!

With years of experience  as a Cinematographer, Producer and Editor, Holly from Videos by Holly seriously knows how to produce an incredible video and I really want you to get to know her better because if you are wanting to dip your toes in the world of video blogs or creating video programs or whatever it may be, Holly is an incredible resource to learn how.

Without further ado, please meet Holly:

Tell us a little bit more about what you do. What is your mission?

I teach online entrepreneurs the skills they need to create videos they love on their own and empower them to go from, confused to confident on their video journey.

My mission is to pass along my knowledge to as many people as possible so they can create videos that inspire, form connections and share what they know with their audiences. I tell people just because you are doing it alone; it doesn’t mean you’re alone. Let me be the training wheels on your bike and help you until you are riding off into the sunset poppin’ wheelies. woo hoo!

What do you love most about your job? What intrigues you by it?

I love everything about my job. The thought of calling it a “job” is actually funny to me. I would do this for free. I love being challenged and with Videos by Holly I am constantly challenging myself to reach higher and further and aspiring to do more. I love the creativity that runs through every aspect of my business.  I love helping other people gain clarity when it comes to using video in their businesses and showing them just how fun it can be. I just love it all.

I am sure there are others, like me, who want to add video to their blog/website and are terrified of the process. What advice can you give them?

There’s a great quote that inspires me, and it says, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” Everyone starts with their first video, and I can almost guarantee you that no one looks back on their first videos and says, "That was great, no need to improve anything."

Putting yourself out there can be a little scary, believe me I know. I started my video journey behind the camera. I’ve been working in NYC as a cinematographer since 2008, and in theory I knew it all. What I’m supposed to say and how I am supposed to talk, stuff about the equipment and the whole production process, but I am a real person with all of my own fears and insecurities. I learned how to push past all of that by just putting myself back in front of the camera and practicing. I created a 5 step review process and each time I would record myself I would watch it back and figure out what I was doing right and where I needed to improve. Over time,  it became easier and easier. The key here is not to be so hard on yourself. We are our own worst critics after all.

Check out Holly's video on how to overcome your fear of being on the camera here

What do you do to stay healthy? Any routines or rituals that help you set up for your day?

I like to run. I try to get a good run in about 3 times a week, more if I can. I am currently training for my annual mud run. This will be my 4th year participating in this type of run. I am currently counting the days down, 22 more days. Other then that I focus on making sure I eat healthy. My philosophy on staying healthy is every little bit counts. So if I can take the stairs instead of the elevator, I’ll do it. If I can eat an apple or an apple pie. I pick the apple. Every little bit counts.

Tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised by.

I typically only wear makeup when I’m shooting my videos. I don’t normally walk around with full makeup, eyelashes and done up hair. Most of the time I'm home alone, working in my PJ’s with no makeup on or in workout gear, sweating all over myself running down the street.

In your words, what is a Savoury Soul?

A soul that tastes good. No seriously, a savory soul to me is someone who takes great care of the things in life that truly matter. The things in life that build your character and align you with your true purpose.

A Savoury Soul -- Krista Martin // Make Your Mark

smile and heart It's Friday again! Whoop whoop! Today's juicy soul is Krista Martin from Make Your Mark.

Krista's mission is to work with entrepreneurs and solopreneurs that crave freedom and want to move through overwhelm and fear so they can make their unique mark on the world. Sounds a little like every new entrepreneur or solopreneur, , right?

Krista has such a bright and lovely disposition and a kind heart.

Without further ado....

Tell us a little more about what you do? What is your mission?

Amanda, thank you for this opportunity! I am so excited to be part of your interview series.

Ok, so what do I do? I am a business strategist and coach. I work with female entrepreneurs that feel overwhelmed, disorganized, and not sure where to start with their business. We get to partner together to uncover what is keeping them stuck and put together a strategic plan that gets them into action. Basically, we figure out what they want to achieve and put together a road map to get them there in less time so that they can spend their time on revenue generating activities, not all of the other stuff that makes you want to poke your eyeballs out.

We put together systems so that they don’t get lost in their daily list of “to do’s”. We craft a launch plan. An annual marketing calendar. We have lots of fun breaking big projects into bite sized pieces. You can probably tell, but planning and systems creation are my specialty. :)

What do you love most about helping others create the life and business they want?

I love helping people find more time in their day and more money in their bank account. It’s human nature to crave meaningful work. It’s not human nature to work 24 hours a day.

I get to help business owners create the business and life that they love - and find the time to spend with those that matter most to them. Sell what you know and outsource or delegate the rest! I cannot think of a better way to spend my days than doing that!

What is your number one secret to get past overwhelm in starting a business ( which is what most of us entrepreneurs face)?

Oh, I love this question! And this is one that I hear every single day when I’m working with my clients.

My first recommendation is to breathe. Go on a long walk, call a friend, or even lay on the floor and close your eyes. Step away from wherever you are and get out of your head. Think about who you are becoming and the person that you want to be today.

If I had to say one thing that I would recommend to anyone feeling overwhelmed, it would be to breathe. Nothing is as bad it seems.

Then, take a few minutes to write everything down. Put everything that’s in your head down on paper. Big things, small things, EVERYTHING. Choose three projects that will take you closer to your goals. Put the rest on hold.

Now make another list. Write down five things that you can do this week on those projects.

Now look at your schedule and plan time – uninterrupted time – to devote to the three projects you chose.

When someone feels overwhelmed, they aren’t living in the now. They are living in tomorrow, next week, and next year. So, the secret is to take a break from all of that nonsense and to re-join the NOW. Be realistic and put a plan together.

Breathe. Write it all down. Plan.

Also, on my website, www.kristamartin.com, you can download a free guide on “The 5 Secrets to Get Past Overwhelm + Get Into Action” if you are interested in learning more tips and techniques.

As someone who works with entrepreneurs, what are some common challenges that your clients come to you with?

This is another great question.

The people that I work with come to me with so many great ideas and big goals and amazing aspirations. That doesn’t sound like a “challenge” at first glance, but it is for them. They have so many great ideas that they don’t know where to start. Or which project to start.

The entrepreneurs that I work with need someone to help them lay out a plan and to teach them what they haven’t yet learned. They want someone to help them to achieve their goals in a meaningful way. They will figure out how to do whatever it is that they must do…they just need someone to help them put together the specific plan of how to get there.

They usually work too hard and for too little. I help them to raise their prices and find their dream clients. I help them to launch programs, put together systems to increase productivity, create a monthly marketing plan for the year, create new offerings and to build their list.

What are some of your personal goals for your own business?

Another great question, Amanda!

My personal goals revolve around supporting more mompreneurs than I have before. I see such a need for support in this subset of the entrepreneurs out there. These women have such amazing gifts AND they have an amazing home life. I want them to be able to share their gifts with the world in a way that truly fulfills them.

I will write a book.

I will grow my business to be large enough so that I am able to donate a ton of money to help homeless animals in shelters. (LOVE THIS ONE!)

I want to be a role model for my children showing them that you can love your work, make a great living, AND enjoy your family.

What do you do to stay healthy? Any routines or rituals?

To stay healthy, we purchased a Vitamix. So, we chop up a bunch of green things every morning and drink that on our way out the door.

ILOVE working out at CrossFit. Yes, I’m sore most of the time, but it’s a really great kind of “sore”.

Other than that, I don’t have any specific routines or rituals…with children I’ve let my 6 or 7 days a week at the gym diminish slightly but not too much. I just cannot get enough of those little ones!

What is a Savoury Soul to you?

When I think of a “savoury soul”, these words come to mind: -wholesome -fulfilled -happy -sunshine -a cozy blanket wrapped around my neck -a kiss on the cheek from a loved ones

Thank you again for this opportunity to be part of your community, Amanda! I appreciate everything that you do.

A Savoury Soul: Jules Galloway

Today's lovely guest is Jules Galloway, a naturopath and holistic health coach  who specialized in gut health. Her mission is to educate and motivate you to explore a variety of foods, help you make small, achievable changes to increase your well-being, and to spread the word that it’s easier than you think to feel awesome again! Without further ado meet this lovely gem...

Jules Galloway2

Tell me a little more about why you became a naturopath? What is your mission?

I became a naturopath after becoming jaded by the limitations of conventional medicine. I had seen close friends and family members suffer the side effects of drugs and medical procedures, and became frustrated that a lot of common health conditions can be easily prevented with diet, exercise, detoxing and a positive mindset. My mission is to teach people that’s it’s easier than you think to live a healthier life.

You specialize in gut health and food intolerance. Can you tell me why you are so passionate about that topic?

I grew up in a family where 2 members had coeliac disease, so I learned all about eating gluten free at an early age. But it wasn’t until much later that I was diagnosed with my own set of food intolerance's! I had always been a sickly person until I straightened out my diet and avoided the foods which were hurting me. Because my health improved so dramatically from this point, I am now passionate about helping others.

What are some of the most common allergens and why should you remove even a small intolerance from your diet?

The most common allergens are gluten, dairy, nuts, eggs and seafood. But you can be allergic or intolerant to just about anything. I’ve seen people who are sensitive to beans, rice, citrus, and even kiwifruit! Even a small intolerance will chip away at your health over a long period of time. You may not notice it or make the connection, but intolerance's can affect your moods, immune system, skin, and digestion, just to name a few.

How has your own health changed over the years? What do different now that you didn’t do then?

I used to eat a lot of processed foods which were nutrient poor. White rice, white pasta, lots of convenience foods, low fat foods, junk foods… I also used to smoke cigarettes and go out to a lot of parties. I quit smoking over a decade ago, I’m not such a wild child anymore, and these days I eat a mostly unprocessed diet, with lots of juices, raw veggies, fruit and smoothies. My health has improved outta sight! Less mood swings, less anxiety, more energy, no candida problems anymore, and a better immune system. Yay!

What is your daily healthy routine? How do you implement self-care into your daily practice?

It goes without saying that I try and eat well all day long, and I make sure I get enough nutrients by adding juices, smoothies and superfoods to my diet. But I also look after myself by exercising regularly. I surf a couple of times per week, do classes at the gym, take my dogs on long walks, and do lots of yoga! I’m also a big fan of chicken soup, a hot bath and an early night if I’m feeling run down. I’ve learned to listen to my body and give it what it needs. And I take the time these days to slow down, smile and be grateful.

What is your go to favorite meal and snacks?

My favorite meal when I’m in a rush is a smoothie. Blend some fruit, dairy free protein powder, almond milk, chia seeds and a handful of greens, and you can power through whatever life throws at you. You can’t beat a quick and easy goats cheese and kale omelet if you’ve got 5 minutes up your sleeve and need a quick protein hit. I love making hearty soups in winter, and big salads in summer. For snacks I keep nuts, seeds and fresh fruit on hand, and sometimes make a batch of bliss balls with nuts, dates, coconut oil and raw cacao. Oh, and I’m hooked on coconut milk yoghurt!

In your words, what is A Savoury Soul?

A Savoury Soul is someone who is not afraid to be adventurous, who is dedicated to making positive changes for their mind and body, and who thinks health and happiness are the most important goals in life.
