Superfood Shoutout: The Avocado

I probably eat half of an avocado every single day. I'm not even kidding you. I've loved the smooth green goddess of a fruit (yes, it's a fruit) for as long as I can remember and they are a staple in my diet. For awhile there, avocados and all other fats got a really bad rep. I'm talking about the 1990's when everything was no fat, low-fat, or sugar free. Crazy how quickly diet trends can change because eventually it became obvious that this was ridiculous and that certain fats (monounsaturated) where healthy if not necessary in your diet. Our friend the avocado has those fats and thank goodness!

Superfood Shoutout: Avocado

The Goods:Avocados are a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C,K, folate, and B6. Half an avocado has 160 calories, 15 grams of heart-healthy unsaturated fat, and only 2 grams saturated fat. One contains more than one-third daily value of vitamin C, and more than half the day’s requirements of vitamin K.

Along with it's anti-inflammatory properties, eating avocado has also been shown to help reduce liver damage and help increase nutrient absorption.

And, it's been shown to help with bad breath because it cleanses the intestines. The list goes on and on and on...

How to get more of it: There are so many ways to include avocado into your diet. Try making homemade guacamole using one of the recipes found here or add sliced avocado to your sandwiches, wraps or a giant green salad. I will often just slice up an avocado, put a tiny bit of sea salt and eat it as a snack. The options are limitless so have fun with it. I've even made vegan chocolate mouse found here.
